Yatadera and Hydrangeas

Colorful hydrangeas
planted in honor of Jizo.

Kongosen-ji, a temple located on Mt. Yata in Yamatokoriyama City, Nara, has been known since ancient times as a sacred place for Jizo worship. Although its official name is Kongosen-ji, but it is nicknamed "Hydrangea Temple" due to the approximately 10,000 hydrangeas of about 60 different species planted within the temple grounds. Since the Jizo Bodhisattva was enshrined there by Manmai Shonin and Ono no Takamura in the early Heian period, Yatadera has prospered as a center of Jizo worship. Jizo Bodhisattva is worshiped as a merciful Buddha who will protect us even at the court of judgment of King Enma.

During the rainy season, the hydrangeas on the grounds are in full bloom and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery. It has become a popular spot visited by many tourists from all over Japan and around the world every year.

You can write down your wishes, express gratitude for your daily life, and copy to calm your mind.
